We KNOW New Jersey Can Do Better.
We are parents, guardians, siblings, direct support and concerned citizens that speak truth to power because rights delayed are rights denied.
For too long, people with disabilities and their families have been told to be patient while policies and systemic barriers continue to limit choice, community living, meaningful supports, and self-determination. Too often, systems created to serve people have instead required people to serve the system.
We reject the idea that the appearance of compliance is enough.
A system can follow every procedure and still leave people isolated.
A system can complete every form and still deny opportunity.
A system can meet every administrative requirement while people lose relationships, housing choices, employment opportunities, and control over their own lives.
We KNOW New Jersey can do better.
We envision a future where civil rights are not theoretical promises but lived realities.
A future where every person lives in the most integrated setting of their choosing.
Where supports follow the person—not the program.
Where public resources are measured by the lives they improve.
Where self-advocates and families have a permanent seat at every table where decisions are made.
Where belonging matters more than bureaucracy.
Where outcomes matter more than oppression disguised as compliance.
We speak with evidence.
We speak with lived experience.
We speak with courage.
When policies create barriers to freedom, we will challenge them.
When systems fail to honor rights guaranteed under federal and state law, we will demand accountability.
When people are excluded from decisions that shape their lives, we will insist on meaningful partnership.

We seek a New Jersey where person-centered planning becomes person-centered living; where self-determination is not the exception but the expectation; where every person has the opportunity to pursue a life filled with connection, purpose, dignity, and choice; and where government is measured not by the rules it enforces, but by the freedom it makes possible.
Because the true measure of any system is not how well it protects itself.
The true measure of a system is how faithfully it protects the rights, freedom, dignity, and future of the people it exists to serve.
Until that promise becomes reality, we will continue to speak, to advocate, to organize, and to hold power accountable.

The New Jersey Self-Direction Alliance exists to transform systems built around "paper compliance" into systems built around people.
We believe individuals and families are the experts in their own lives. Public resources are meant to create opportunity, not obstacles. Rights guaranteed in law must be realized in everyday life.
Through advocacy, education, partnership, and accountability, we work to ensure that every person has the authority, support, and opportunity to direct their own life.
We challenge policies that limit freedom. We amplify voices that have too often been excluded. We hold systems accountable for delivering on the promise of self-determination.
